Translating Amusement Factory

Thank you for working on this. This file is everything you need; there is no need to have seen the game's code, and nothing here assumes you have played it.

Amusement Factory is a theme park building game. The player lays out paths, buys rides and shops, hires staff and tries to keep a crowd of guests happy and the park out of the red. The tone is warm and light - it is a game about building something you are fond of, not a business simulation.

The register: informal, throughout

The game talks to the player directly and always informally.

Dutch je / jij, never u
Brazilian Portuguese você, never tu or o senhor
Spanish , never usted or vos

Imperatives are fine and common - "Build this", "Call mechanic". Keep them as short commands rather than turning them into polite requests.

Glossary

These words appear on buttons, in window titles and inside sentences. The same English word must become the same word every time, or the player sees three names for one thing.

If a word is missing here and you have to invent one, please add a comment on the string so it can go in this table. A word used twice is a word that belongs in the glossary.

Things in curly brackets

{count}, {role}, {amount}, {day} and so on are slots the game fills in with a number or a name while you are playing. They must survive into your translation, spelled exactly as they are.

English Reached the limit of {count} {role}.
Dutch Je hebt de grens van {count} {role} bereikt.

You may move them anywhere in the sentence. That is the whole point of them - word order is the first thing that changes between languages, and these let you put the number where your language wants it:

English   {day} {month}, year {year}
Spanish   {day} de {month}, año {year}

What you must not do is rename one, translate the word inside the brackets, or drop one. Weblate will stop you at submit time if you do.

Things in angle brackets

A few strings carry formatting: <b>bold</b>, <color=#2E8A4B>green</color>, <size=15>. Keep the tags, move them with the words they belong to, and keep every opening tag closed.

Text between double stars

**like this** marks the one instruction in a tutorial paragraph - the game draws it in colour so a player can find the thing to do without re-reading the paragraph. Keep the pair, and put it around the equivalent instruction in your language, which may not be in the same place in the sentence.

An odd number of stars breaks the rest of the card, so they always come in twos.

Money

The park's currency is the euro, and it stays the euro in every language. It is a game unit rather than a real price - the whole game is balanced in it, and prices are not converted. Please do not change it to reais or to dollars.

There is one string that decides where the symbol goes:

msgid "€ {amount}"

Translate it the way your language writes an amount. Spanish uses {amount} €; Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese keep € {amount}. The number itself is formatted by the game, with the thousands separator your language uses.

Length

Most of the game is windows and panels with room to breathe, and a translation that runs a little longer than the English is fine. The exceptions are buttons and the toolbar, where the label has a fixed pill to sit in. Where a string is tight, it carries a length limit and Weblate will warn you.

If a short label genuinely cannot be said in the space, say so in a comment rather than abbreviating into something odd - the button can usually be widened.

Plurals

Strings with a plural form show you two boxes. Fill both.

Brazilian Portuguese counts zero as singular - 0 item, not 0 itens. Dutch and Spanish use the plural for zero. Weblate knows this and labels the boxes for you.

Do not translate

  • Amusement Factory - the game's name, everywhere, including in the middle of a sentence.
  • Steam, Steam Deck - product names.
  • Anything that names a menu item in the developer tools, for example "Run Tools > Amusement Factory > Rebuild placeable catalog". These are messages to the developer, not to a player, and they are left in English on purpose. Leave the box empty.
  • 1x, 2x, 3x - the game speed.
  • Key names like (F) inside a label such as Follow (F) - the letter is the key on the keyboard, so keep it as it is even where the word around it changes.

If a string does not make sense

Leave it empty and add a comment. An empty string is safe - the game falls back to the English, which is a mixed screen but never a broken one. A guess is harder to find later than a gap.

Every string carries a reference to where it lives in the game, and many carry a note explaining the situation. If neither is enough, ask - the answer usually reveals that the English needs fixing too.
